Henry Billion, my Father, started in the car business in 1935. He started as a salesman, and finally ended up as the office manager at an Oldsmobile dealership in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. When the dealer retired, my dad was able to scrape funds together to purchase the store. Since that time, the Billion name has been associated with fair dealing, honesty, and community service. He built a very successful business because he surrounded himself with good people and always treated them fairly. We strive to achieve those same goals.
I was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and raised in the automobile business there. After graduating from College in 1973, I went to work full time at Billion Olds Toyota in Sioux Falls and worked primarily in the service areas. However, I had a strong desire to get out on my own and I loved the mountains.
I discovered Bozeman, Montana while I was on vacation in July of 1977. I was searching for job opportunities out West. On a particular day I was lucky enough to travel through Bozeman and personally meet Bob Dye, the former dealer. I visited with Bob about my experience, and my desire to move west. Bob remembered that visit.
About a year later, my father happened to sit next to Bob Dye at the opening session of an NADA convention, with over 10,000 dealers in attendance. He introduced himself, and Bob remembered me, and my visit. He told my father that he was willing to meet him for breakfast, and discuss possibly selling his store.
After a trip to Bozeman, my Father and I were able to purchase Robert F. Dye Inc., in May of 1978.
My father passed away in 1991, but his wisdom has guided for the 30 plus years I have lived in the Gallatin Valley. From him I learned many lessons for success. "Work hard, be honest, treat your customers fairly, and care about your employees."
